When I was little, my grandma often said ” You are what you eat” and I didn’t quite understand what she meant. Today, I think that she didn’t either but it was something the elders said. After studying anatomy in medical grad school, I finally understand how we become what we eat and drink.
I have learned of the amazing functions of our metabolism and how our body regenerates at all times. Our body also has the ability to transform the food we eat into particles that our body is actually able to use to rebuild itself and the rest is excreted. isn’t that the most sophisticated mechanism ever? I am amazed at all that our body an do.
- Eat with the seasons
- Notice how you feel after eating
- Understand the difference between hunger and appetite.
What you eat is self care.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine we like balance, all food groups are important. It is also encouraged to eat with the seasons and locally as much as possible. Processed foods are considered to be the most unhealthy kind for us humans due to high amounts of preservatives and synthetic ingredients.
The right way of eating is also important. If you eat in a hurry, your digestion can be affected. If you eat and watch television or your phone, the spleen is not happy. In Traditional Chinese Medicine the spleen likes when you concentrate on eating alone in order to get all the nutrients, chewing is important as well.
If we perform multiple actions while eating, our digestion may slow down, the necessary enzymes may not be released and our nutrients may not be absorbed. So many factors depend on the correct digestion. It is crucial to concentrate on the way we eat as much as what we put on our plate.
Emotions affect our digestion
Did you know that your emotional well being can affect how we digest? iIf we are stressed, our body goes into fight or flight which means our stomach may not produce as many digestive enzymes, slowing down our digestion and affecting many processes in our body. Chronic stress will have a negative impact on the way we digest our foods. It is important to address our emotional health for optimal digestion.
- How we eat is just as important as what we eat
- Eating food in positive environment assists us relaxation
- A good meal will have us energized for hours
